AVAYA News - Avaya Wins Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award for the Second Year in a Row
By Madhubanti Rudra, TMCnet Contributor
The business collaboration and communications solutions innovator Avaya (News - Alert) continued its legacy of technology excellence with the winning of the prestigious Thomas Alva Edison patent award from the R&D Council of NJ for a second year in row.
Along with two of its labs researchers, Birgit Geppert and Frank Roessler, Avaya received the prestigious award in Information Technology category. The award winning patent, "Telecommunications Endpoint for Managing Multi-Conferencing" (U.S. Patent 7,995,733) is associated with a unique method of enabling people to simultaneously manage one or more teleconferences, including establishing smaller group sessions within a larger conference and joining multiple conferences into one. The technology serves as a key product attribute of the Avaya Flare Experience.
The Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award is granted each year by the R&D Council of New Jersey to honor the noteworthy efforts of scientists and inventors, as well as their organizations. Fourteen NJ companies, including Avaya and 30 researchers from a wide spectrum of industries, were handpicked to receive this year's award, according to a news statement.
As said earlier, this is the second consecutive year that Avaya was recognized by the R&D Council for its scientific breakthroughs. In 2011, Avaya was honored in the telecommunications category for "Method and Apparatus Extending Calls to Internal Switch Extensions Out to External Network Endpoints" (U.S. Patent 6,751,309). The patented technology went a long way to bridge the gap between desk phones and mobile devices. The technology reportedly gave Avaya the ability to turn nearly any mobile device, home phone, smartphone or remote off-site phone into an extension of a single office number (video). This helped reinforce the company’s leadership position in mobility.
This year’s award ceremony coincides with the R&D Council’s 50th anniversary celebrations. The event is taking place on November 8, 2012 at the Liberty Science Center.
“This year is the Council's 50th Anniversary and we are so pleased to honor Avaya for the second year in a row for its vision and excellence in telecommunications. New Jersey is the birthplace of the telecommunications industry and Avaya is keeping this legacy alive and well,” Anthony Cicatiello, president of R&D Council noted in a statement.
In other news, Avaya announced that AmeriMerchant, a merchant cash advance company, Fuoco Group, an accounting and advisory firm, and RootWorks, a consulting company, have selected it's unified communications.
